Google Maps puts each location where it really is and colours it by the state of its devices; ipinfo's network data names who owns an address — the ISP behind a site's connection in Network Diagnostics, and the company behind each NetFlow talker. Both run on SmartChoice's accounts; there is nothing for a customer to connect.
A NOC that can't see where the red is has to read a list. SmartTile keeps every location on a live map — but only if every location has coordinates, and an address typed by hand used to leave the pin missing. Geocoding now happens on the server as the location is saved. On the network side, 203.0.113.10 means nothing to a site manager; Acme Fiber does. Both are SmartChoice-run services inside SmartTile, not customer connections.
Location and organization address fields (and signup / Quick Start) offer Google Places suggestions; picking one stores the coordinates with the address.
Typed an address, imported one, or changed it without coordinates? SmartTile geocodes it on save with the Geocoding API and stamps latitude, longitude, the Google place id and geo_source = google. Default on.
If Google cannot place an address, the location is flagged needs geo-fix. Admin → Provisioning → geo-fix previews and back-fills every flagged location in one run.
/maps shows the locations you can see, clustered when zoomed out and one pin per site when zoomed in, coloured by device state; pins at the same spot are fanned out with a leader line to their true position.
The dashboard carries the same map, so an outage shows up geographically without leaving the home screen.
Server-side geocoding is locations.server_geocode.enabled, shown next to the geo-fix tool on Admin → Provisioning.
Top talkers and top destinations are labelled with the network owner from ipinfo's ASN database (e.g. Microsoft, Fastly), including IPv6; reverse DNS is used only when the database has nothing. Private addresses read Local network.
A diagnostics run (superadmin preview) shows the site's public IP and ISP, from SmartTile's speed-test server looking the address up in the same database.
The database is a file on SmartTile's server, so owner lookups make no outbound call and send no customer IP to a third party.

The Google key and any ipinfo token are SmartChoice's server settings. Customers enter nothing and no credential of theirs is involved.
The geocode runs after the location is saved and never throws; a failure only flags the row for the geo-fix run.
A location that already has a real coordinate pair is not geocoded again; 0,0 and blanks are treated as missing.
NetFlow and diagnostics owner names come from a database file on the server — the IPs your sites talk to are not sent anywhere to be named.
